SANTA MONICA PIER SIGN. In 1991 there was a huge volcanic eruption by Mount Pinatubo in the Philippines. When the ash reached the stratosphere and drifted over southern California, we had some spectacular sunsets. Usually, when the sun sets, there is a red glow around the sun as it dips below the horizon, and the rest of the sky turns dark blue. Here, when the sun set, it was as if the entire sky glowed bright red. It was the weirdest sunset I have ever seen. It was also amazing that all the neon lights were lit on the sign. This photograph was shot with a 4x5 view camera with 90mm lens on color transparency film. I scanned the film and used Adobe Photoshop to adjust the final image.
